Golf Retail in the USA

As a UK company, we are always in awe of the grandeur of US retail, so when we had some spare time on a Friday morning before we were scheduled to meet with the David Leadbetter team at ChampionsGate, and then head to Isleworth to meet with Mitchell Spearman (PGA Tour Coach) - we decided we would check out how golf retail looks in the form of a PGA Superstore. In particular, we were intrigued as to just how much space is dedicated to junior golf, and junior golf clubs. WOW! To say their stores are a little larger than anything you will find back in the UK is an understatement!

We stopped by PGA Superstore on Turkey Lake Road in Orlando, and what an experience. Thousands of men’s golf clubs, ladies golf clubs and junior golf clubs and accessories are presented at quality and cover what must be fifty thousand square feet.

There is a large practice putting green surrounded by putters of all shapes, sizes and price points, along with practice accessories and aids for putting development. Plus the worlds toughest putting training aid, PuttOut Pressure Putt Trainer... We thought we weren’t bad putters from two feet, until we tried this!

Just past the putting green, you’ll find bay after bay of demo area, dedicated to each of the leading golf club and accessory manufacturers, and loaded with simulators and digital tracking technology.

So then we worked our way past the Ping section, and Taylormade section and Titleist section until finally in the back left corner of the store we found the Junior Golf section. Although this was by far the biggest Junior Golf section we had every seen in a retail environment, it still took up what just be less than 3% of the floor space available, but this is a common theme across most retailers globally, and the same story online.

The section was dominated by US Kids and Tour Edge, with a scattering of Ping and Taylormade product. The section was well presented, with clear staging of the progression of clubs available as kids progress their golf game and grow in height and strength.

Although we have recently made great strides with the UK’s largest golf retailer, GolPhin is yet to feature in the PGA Superstore, but something we are set to change as we head into 2018.

So watch this space if you’re a regular visitor to a PGA Superstore, or if you just want to ensure your kids get the best start to their golfing lives. The GolPhin GFK and GFK+ ranges will make their way to a store near you very soon. Until that time, make sure you check out the full GolPhin range here.
